Let us help you to offer something special (business improvement grants)

We’re beginning to get more applications for business improvement grants and we’re happy to see that. The whole idea of this grant scheme is to offer support for local businesses, but on top of this we also want to help businesses that want to add something special to the area.

One of the areas of grant funding that people don’t seem to have heard as much about is the option to draw funds for staff training. The idea behind this is that you could potentially provide a new service or product in the area that would help Crieff in general. This could be something like a salon applying for funding for a course in a certain beauty technique (drawing people into the town), or it could be a business that offers some form of repairs service that might want to train in a new type of repair (adding something that visitors and locals alike could benefit from). You know your business better than we do so you will obviously have your own ideas about the sort of training that you might want to go for.

The grants are there for the taking. At the time of writing this we still have around eight and a half thousand pounds available in grants in this year’s budget. These grants are match funded (meaning that we can only provide support for 50% or less of a project) and they are capped depending on your rateable value. The amounts you can apply for are as follows (if you’re not sure of your rateable value feel free to contact me and I can look it up for you):

  • If your rateable value is under £20,000, the grant available to you is 50% up to a maximum grant of £500, though previously vacant properties* could request as much as 75% up to a maximum grant of £750
  • If your rateable value is from £20,001 – £50,000, the grant available to you is 50% up to a maximum grant of £750, though previously vacant properties* could request as much as 75% up to a maximum grant of £1,250
  • If your rateable value is Over £50,001, the grant available to you is 50% up to a maximum grant of £1000, though previously vacant properties* could request as much as 75% up to a maximum grant of £1,750

*properties vacant for 6 months or more

Obviously there is a vetting process for applications so to be in with the best chance please contact me to arrange an informal assessment of your application before it is presented to the relevant people for official assessment. You can find the application form and guidance notes by clicking on these links (guidance notes) (application form).

Please feel free to add any comments or questions you have about grants for training in the box below. I hope this information has been of use to you, All the best, John
