It’s a long hot summer!

For once all of the UK, including Scotland has enjoyed a fantastic warm, sunny summer with no end in sight.

The great weather makes keeping the kids entertained during the school holidays a lot easier, which is a bonus for all busy parents. We are lucky to have some great parks and open spaces within the town. A firm favourite is Macrosty Park, which has plenty of open spaces for your little ones to run around in, the play park and of course the Turret Burn to cool your feet in. The Pavilion Café is conveniently located close to the play park and sells a range of delicious food, drink and ice creams to keep everyone cool, hydrated and happy.

Crieff Golf Club is another great option for an outdoor family day. They now have Family Tees on their 9 hole Dornoch Course. Two kids under 18 can play for free when accompanied by a paying adult. The Clubhouse is a great venue to rest and refuel after your exertions with a wide range of food and drinks for adults and kids alike.

If you are planning on spending a lot of time outside remember to keep everyone protected from the sun and well hydrated. Strathearn Pharmacy and Right Medicine both stock a range of sun protection creams and sprays as well as hay fever tablets and rehydration powders should you need them. To protect everyone’s eyesight remember to wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB filters. Research has shown that up to 80% of the eye’s lifetime exposure to UV light is reached before the age of 18. Because children have larger pupils and clearer lenses they are more susceptible to sun damage. P & A eyecare are on hand with help and advice and also stock Zoobugs great range of kids sunglasses.

The centre of Crieff also has a great outdoor option if you’re looking for somewhere for lunch with a garden. The Tower Gastro Pub has a great garden complete with a climbing fort, hens and a vegetable garden. The garden provides herbs and vegetables for the kitchen ensuring that both the main and kids menu’s benefit from the freshest seasonal ingredients.

There’s nothing better to cool down with on a hot summer’s day than an ice cream, if you’re feeling a bit nostalgic Whisk-e-Vapes have soft scoop 99 cones and tubs with sauce and marshmallows. If you prefer a more traditional style ice cream Gordon and Durward stock a great range of flavours from the iconic Iron Brew to perennial favourite mint, choc chip or pistachio. Crunch Munch has a great range of ice creams to chose from too and specialise in ice cream cakes, including an Oreo flavoured one. Vanilla, strawberry, mint choc chip, rum and raisin, what’s your favourite flavour?
